When a page has no meta description, Google writes the two lines under your result from whatever it finds — often the navigation, sometimes a cookie notice. You are still ranking; you are just being sold badly.
This is the fix, in order, with the platform-specific bit included. If you want the background first, the issue library entry explains what a description does and what it is worth.
What usually causes it
It is usually a template, not a page
One page with no description is a five-minute fix. Four hundred is a template that never had a description field bound to it, and finding that is the difference between an afternoon and a fortnight.
An empty tag is worse than none
Some themes output <meta name="description" content="">, which looks deliberate and stops nothing. Both count as missing; the fix is the same.
Duplicates count too
One description reused site-wide makes every result look identical. If you are fixing missing ones, fix repeated ones in the same pass — they come from the same place.
How to fix it
Check the page you are worried about
Use the meta description checker above. It reads the live page and tells you whether the tag exists, how long it is, and whether it will be truncated in a result.
Find every page that has the same problem
One page tells you nothing about the pattern. A crawl groups the missing descriptions by template, so you can see whether it is six pages or a whole post type.
Write the ones that earn money first
Homepage, pricing, top three service or category pages, and the five posts with the most traffic. Aim for 140–155 characters saying what the visitor gets and why it is worth clicking — not what the page contains.
Fix the template, not the pages
In WordPress, set the description pattern per post type in Yoast or Rank Math. In Shopify, edit the theme's meta template. In Webflow, bind the description field on the collection template. In Next.js, export generateMetadata on the route. One change, hundreds of pages.
Confirm it shipped
Re-run the checker on a page that used the template. Themes cache, plugins fight, and a description that is correct in the admin is not the same as a description that is in the HTML.
What the audit checks
- Every page with no description, grouped by template
- Empty description tags, which look correct in most dashboards
- Descriptions repeated across several pages
- Descriptions that will be truncated in a search result
